Judging by the enquiries I receive, there appears to be some confusion about what you can or can't tow if you obtained your UK category B driving licence after 1st January 1997.
This page will attempt to explain it in plain English.
This means Maximum Authorised Mass. This should be taken to mean the permissible maximum weight, also known as the gross vehicle weight.
The unladen weight of any vehicle is the vehicles own weight when not carrying any goods or burden. This is inclusive of the body and all parts which are necessary to or ordinarily used with the vehicle or trailer when working on a road exclusive of fuel and, in the case of an electrically powered vehicle, the batteries.
The minimum kerb weight of a vehicle is its total weight, plus all standard equipment, car liquids such as washer water and a full tank of fuel, but no cargo. Some EU manufacturers also include the weight of a 75kg driver.
As long as your towing vehicle's MAM is 3500kg or less, you can tow a trailer (braked or unbraked) up to 750kg.
If you want to tow a trailer with MAM exceeding 750kg then the whole combination of vehicle and trailer must be 3500kg or less. The trailer MAM must not exceed
the unladen weight of the tow vehicle.
Example: Your trailer MAM is 1500kg so the towing vehicle's unladen weight must be 1500kg minimum and it's MAM can not exceed 2000kg.
You are not permitted to tow an unbraked trailer if it's MAM or Gross Vehicle Weight exceeds 50% of the towing vehicles Kerb Weight
Diddyvans Teardrop Trailers have a MAM of 500kg so anyone who has passed their UK driving test after 1st January 1997 and has a category B licence should be able to tow one providing the tow vehicle is suitable. Most vehicle manufacturers will have information about the maximum allowed trailer weight in the vehicle handbook.
For customers with cars with a kerb weight less than 1000kg we can build a lighter teardrop with a MAM of 400kg.
